Puffy ball gowns and fascinators are a no-no. Instead, keep it straight and elegant for this year’s Durban July.
These were some of the tips from Durban fashion stylist Mthokozisi Chiyi, who is also known as uSwenka (one with good, expensive taste in clothing).

Chiyi, who also gives fashion tips on the Vuka Mzansi breakfast show on uKhozi FM, said people should not only focus on Western fashions in interpreting this year’s theme – “A Right Royal Affair” – but should also try African, Indian and other cultures.
The designer’s July clients include two Joburg business couples, Durban comedian Felix Hlophe and “a few government people”.
He said: “For people to look their best, they must wear straight-cut, well tailored and elegant outfits. But they should not only focus on Western influences; they should also try African or Indian royalty. A big no-no would be the fascinators, which in my view have been overdone.”
Shaped bags should be used for a classy look, and women would look good in straw hats, he said. People should also try Zulu, Swazi, Venda or other tribes’ regal attire.
“If it gets too cold, ladies can bring their fur shrugs to put over their shoulders, as this will not interfere with their outfits.”
Chiyi has degrees in communications and environmental studies, but decided to follow what he says was his “calling” to make people feel and look good. To draw inspiration, he has travelled to Dubai, Turkey, Hong Kong, China and Thailand.
“This is where I pick up new trends and styles. I go to the fashion weeks and try to bring back what I can to this side.”
Chiyi said that although he did not sit in front of a sewing machine, he could get anyone to look and feel good. “I am a stylist; I dress people – from tying up their shoelaces right to the type of belt they should wear with their outfit.”
For himself, Chiyi would rock a Prince Charles-meets-David Beckham outfit, accessorising with shocking red socks and blue shoes.
